Writing job descriptions from scratch is one of those tasks that eats an hour before you've even noticed. You know the structure. You know what you need. But the blank page still stares back.
So here are 15 free job description templates you can copy, customise, and post within minutes. Each one follows a structure that works across LinkedIn, Indeed, and StepStone — and they're written to avoid the bias patterns that CIPD flagged in their 2024 inclusive hiring research.
What Makes a Good Job Description?
Before we get to the templates — a quick reality check. Research from LinkedIn's Gender Insights Report found that women apply to 20% fewer jobs than men, largely because JDs use language that signals exclusivity. So these templates deliberately avoid gendered terms, unnecessary "requirements" inflation, and the classic wall-of-bullet-points format.
Every template below follows this structure:
- Role title — Clear, searchable. No "Ninja" or "Rockstar"
- About the role — 2-3 sentences. What the person will actually do daily
- Key responsibilities — 5-7 specific tasks
- What you'll need — Hard requirements only. Be honest
- Nice to have — Things that help but aren't dealbreakers
- What we offer — Salary range, benefits, culture
If you're in a country covered by the EU Pay Transparency Directive (most of Europe by 2026), you'll need salary ranges anyway. Might as well include them from the start.

Tips for Customising These Templates
A few things to keep in mind as you adapt these:
Be specific about "you'll need" vs "nice to have." The Harvard Business Review found that listing too many requirements discourages qualified candidates — especially women and underrepresented groups — from applying. If it's not genuinely required, move it to "nice to have."
Include salary ranges. The EU Pay Transparency Directive requires it for most member states by 2026. Even where it isn't mandated, including a range increases applications by up to 30% according to LinkedIn data.
Use gender-neutral language. In Germany, use (m/w/d) in your job titles — it's required under the AGG (Allgemeines Gleichbehandlungsgesetz). In English, avoid "he/she" — use "you" or "they."
Keep it under 700 words. Indeed's research shows that JDs between 700-2,000 characters get the most applications. Nobody reads a 2,000-word job posting.
Managing Job Descriptions at Scale
If you're posting 5+ roles simultaneously, copy-pasting templates into LinkedIn gets old fast. An ATS (applicant tracking system) lets you store templates, customise per role, and push to multiple job boards from one place.
Yena stores your job description templates inside the platform, so your team can reuse proven formats across roles and clients. Combined with AI-powered sourcing, you go from template to qualified pipeline in hours, not days.
But honestly, a Google Doc with these templates works fine until you hit about 10 concurrent open roles. Don't over-tool yourself before you need to.
